why in the name of satan’s butthole are there so many little pubescent youngsters hailing lord of the rings as if it was never around for the past several decades? as if lord of the rings was as trendy as puff-paint pants, tie-dye shirts, and sprayable cheez-whiz? i’m sick of our generation claiming things as their own. and if that’s not horrible enough, give it a few years — after the third and final segment “the return of the king” — for the whole film adaptation of lord of the rings to be forgotten. (poof!) all it takes is another julia roberts goo-fest or justin timberlake in a wet t-shirt to cover the genius that is tolkien.
it’s not just the present mass hysteria regarding tolkien’s work that has me riled. it’s the fact that most of what i’ve seen from my generation seems to be sex-crazed maniacs, pretentious snobs, and haughty ambassadors. we pat ourselves on the back for stealing things from the past and making them our own while we pay mere lip-service to every shred of ethical value attached to those past remembrances. i’m tired of feeling as though i’m the last person in the world with any morals, as if morals weren’t trendy this year so the only solution was to abolish them swiftly in a blur of money and ego.
trends play a huge role in our belief system and our idea of what our lives should reflect. when something new comes along, we jump at the chance to embrace it as our own. and when it goes out of style, we decide that we ought to move onto something new. i’m far from being a traditional conservative; however, the most elemental of values should not be foresaken amidst the blinking lights and brilliant flashes of the future. we lose ourselves in all of the choices we are now able to make, so much that we forget where we came from and how to maintain a balance between living life and truly appreciating it.
ok, so perhaps this initial rant about lord of the rings somehow turned into a sermon. i’m known for travelling off the set course. well, i did use the term “satan’s butthole.” that’s gotta earn me some points with the Big Guy.
