her royal highness

so the queen of england has been in vancouver the past couple of days, dropping hockey pucks and whatnot (the canucks beat the sharks 3-2, by the way), while she makes her royal trans-canada tour. she dropped by ubc this afternoon with a massive entourage — a sight i didn’t bother to stick around and see, being sick like a dog and just as drooly. the music rehearsals outside bothered my classes in the arts building this morning as i tried earnestly to absorb my history lectures through the ruckus of choirs and, apparently, african tribal drum thumpers.

canada is still very much the british colony in that our patriotism still lies within the british monarch, unlike our southern neighbours who managed to cut that soggy umbilical cord a long-ass time ago.

you know, i don’t really mind the british royalty. after magna carta, there’s really no objection from me concerning its present existence. i much like that little old grey-haired woman waving and grinning, though not enough to follow her around vancouver like a rabid anglophile. it just gives us canadians something to smile about, rather than having to worry about whether or not our political leaders are busting a nut on interns’ dresses or creating ridiculous words like “strategerize”.

i’ve always been cool with the british. now prince charles… that’s a different story.
